Things to Do in Panglao: My 2024 Travel Guide

I decided to revisit Panglao Island in Bohol, Philippines, because why not? I love visiting tropical paradises known for their stunning beaches, vibrant marine life, and exciting adventure activities. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, explore underwater wonders, or enjoy local culture, Panglao has something for everyone. This time I decided to venture in to the road more traveled. So let’s go.

Visit the Beaches in Panglao

Alona Beach

Alona Beach is the most famous beach on Panglao Island. Known for its white sand, crystal-clear waters, and lively nightlife, Alona Beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying water sports. Nearby, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, bars, and accommodations.

If you’re looking for a place to stay near Alona Beach, you’ll find numerous options, from budget hostels to luxury resorts. The vibrant atmosphere and stunning scenery make it a must-visit spot on Panglao Island.

Truth be told, I was here almost every afternoon, just soaking in the sea, the breeze, the people, the smell of the food, the music and everything else. I think 4pm is the best time to be here as the sun’s rays become bearable. Just sit on one of the lounges or on the sand. Grab a drink and enjoy.

Doljo Beach

Doljo Beach offers a more tranquil experience compared to Alona Beach. It’s an ideal spot for relaxation, with its long stretch of white sand and calm waters. This beach is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet away from the crowds.

Doljo Beach is known for its beautiful sunsets and serene environment, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. It’s one of the best places to visit in Panglao for a quiet day by the sea.

I bring my family here when they want a more intimate beach experience. It’s not as lively as Alona beach, which is the whole idea of coming here. There’s not much option for food and many other things but the view of the sunset is worth it.

Momo Beach

Momo Beach is a hidden gem on Panglao Island. This serene beach is less crowded, making it an excellent spot for a quiet getaway. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, crystal clear waters, and the laid-back atmosphere.

Momo Beach is perfect for a day trip, where you can relax and take in the natural beauty of Panglao. It’s one of the top things to do in Panglao if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat.

This one is the least crowded of the 3 beaches. The sand is not as fine as the other two. This is the best option if you want a tranquil beach experience.

A Little Adventure and Activities

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

Panglao Island is a haven for scuba divers and snorkelers. The marine sanctuaries around Balicasag Island offer some of the best diving spots, teeming with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, there’s something for everyone.

Balicasag is my go to island when I crave for a little snorkeling. It’s very beginner friendly, just dip your head in the water a little bit and you’ll be transported to another world.

Hinagdanan Cave

Hinagdanan Cave is a must-visit tourist attraction in Panglao. This natural cave features a stunning underground lagoon with clear, turquoise water. The cave is well-lit, allowing visitors to see the impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It’s a great spot for swimming and photography.

Visiting Hinagdanan Cave in 2024 is an unforgettable experience for me, I decided to ride a bike from Alona beach to the cave. It was my first time to do that, it was a grueling 12km ride but definitely one to remember.

Island Hopping and Virgin Island

Island hopping is a popular activity in Panglao. One of the highlights is a visit to Virgin Island, a beautiful sandbar that appears during low tide. The island is perfect for a day trip, where you can swim, snorkel, and enjoy the local seafood sold by vendors.

Virgin Island is a picturesque destination, ideal for those looking to explore the stunning seascapes and enjoy a relaxing day by the water. An island hopping tour often includes stops at Balicasag Island and other nearby spots. Come here early or late in the afternoon if you plan to stay. Also ask your guide about the tide. At high tide you won’t be able to enjoy the sandbar.

Bohol Bee Farm

The Bohol Bee Farm is a unique attraction where you can learn about organic farming and beekeeping. The farm also has a restaurant that serves delicious organic meals, and a shop where you can buy honey and other homemade products.

A visit to the Bohol Bee Farm is both educational and enjoyable, offering a taste of local organic produce and an insight into sustainable farming practices. It’s a popular tourist spot in Bohol. I particularly like watching the ice cream making process especially when they pour the honey. Don’t forget to order the grilled ribs with mango in their restaurant.

Whether you prefer the flexibility of renting a scooter or the convenience of a tricycle, getting around Panglao is straightforward and accessible. A drive from Alona Beach to other parts of the island offers scenic views and easy access to tourist spots.

Motorcycles for rent are usually on the side of the road. If you want to rent a bicycle, finding them can be tricky. You can ask a local or your hotel staff. You can also visit Giuseppe Italian restaurant, that’s where I rented by bicycle in my last visit.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Panglao is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is ideal for beach activities and outdoor adventures. However, Panglao can be visited year-round, with fewer tourists during the rainy season.

My last visit was in month of March, it drizzled a couple of times but not to the point where I had to stay indoor. No matter when you decide to visit, Panglao offers beautiful scenery and enjoyable activities throughout the year. It’s always a great time for a trip to Bohol.
